There is a lot of chatter online about the Electoral College, or EC as they abbreviate it in conversation on Twitter to save character use. You only get 140 or something like that. The Democrats want to abolish the EC in favor of the popular vote. You may have noticed that in two of the past 6 election cycles for President that the winner of the popular vote actually lost the Presidency. Gore way back when, and Hillary in the seminal election of 2016.
Using the idea of the popular vote to elect our President, instead of the state divided EC, would have eliminated two Republican Presidents, and awarded those terms to Democrats. So of course Democrats are “all-in” on eliminating the EC.
Whenever the Democrats find themselves on the wrong side of the rules the first thing they want to do is change the rules. Heads they win, and tails they win. Republicans are not allowed to win.
E Pluribus Unum. From many one. The EC was created for the protection of the smaller states, so they’d have representation. They wouldn’t find themselves ruled by the majority of the larger states. The reason they joined the “union” was because of the creation of the EC, as well as the creation of the Senate. Where every state regardless of size gets two representatives in Congress.
The House is appointed by population. 435 Congressmen or women as dictated by population. And this shifts by census. With some states gaining a representative and some losing, based on demographic flow. A total of 535 in Congress to represent “the people”. Yes, that is correct, little Rhode Island has the same amount of Senators as big old California. Two each. Which allows little Rhode Island to be heard and not drowned out by California, or even nearby New York.
The Democrats, haven taken control over some of the more populous states, California, New York, Illinois, would love to just use their vast majority to rule the nation. California-style. A rule by majority. Eliminating the Electoral College would allow the Democrats to take a permanent control over the election of our President.
The Democrats, having achieved a majority of actual national vote totals would love to rule all of America by majority rule.
I said this the other day, but you know what else is majority rule? Gang Rape. Works great for the men, not so good for the one woman. Think of that woman as Rhode Island in a room with California, New York, Illinois, and Massachusetts.
Of course if you remove the Electoral College and move toward majority rule our nation would come apart before the weekend. Why would the smaller states stay in a union with the larger states dictating their fate?
We have right now the Eastern side of Oregon attempting to secede and join Idaho as a new, larger state of Idaho, since the Eastern side of Oregon is mostly rural and farm oriented, and whose lives mimic that of Idaho far greater than they do the more populous cities in Western Oregon where Liberalism thrives. The rural voters and farmers do not see their views reflected in the way Oregon operates. And they are at the mercy of the big cities blue voters in terms of government policy. Since they’ve gone many, many election cycles absent what they feel is effective representation in state government, they want out.
What is happening in Oregon would happen overnight if you abolish the EC.
No small or medium states want to be ruled by California, Illinois, and New York.
Certainly not Florida, and certainly not Texas, two larger states that don’t quite rival California and New York for population. Texas has it written directly into their charter in joining the union that they have the right to vote to secede whenever they so desire.
If you destroy the EC they’d vote tomorrow morning to leave the union.
There’d be no reason to stay a unified nation absent the EC. Smaller states “rights” would be at the mercy of the larger states vote.
In effect the end of the EC would be the end of the United States of America as we’ve always known her, since the original 13 colonies bonded to form a union.
Adding Puerto Rico as a state, and DC has nothing to do with giving the citizens there representation, it has everything to do with the fact that they are staunchly Democratic and adding them would give Democrats an added 4 Senators and an almost guaranteed Senate majority forever. Ever and ever.
Democrats are on a rant these days. “Eliminate the Electoral College”, “Pack the Supreme Court”.
The Supreme Court discussion is a whole other column. When Democrats have a majority in the court of nine all is well. With Trump appointing more conservative justices who would prefer to interpret the meaning of the constitution based on the intent of the Founding Fathers, as opposed to being “activist judges”. Who are Hell bent on using their own inner voice to interpret the constitution based on a more modern day reading. Under today’s version of the court now leaning majority conservative, it is now demanded we expand the court under a sitting Democrat President who can select a slate of extremely liberal judges who then would have a majority on the court to do the Left’s bidding. If we can’t win through the normal course of events, change the rules.
Living in Florida I’d love to see a break up of all the states. Put up a roadblock at the state line, eliminate the constant flow of northerners and their liberal ways into our state. Allow Key West to secede too to become the Conch Nation they’v always wanted to be. Create a Florida-Key West treaty between “Nation States”.
Get a one time payment from the Feds Social Security funds (I know, I know, there is no “lock box”, there is an IOU), to ensure that SS payments flow as promised to all the retired citizens who are due. And then to create a new social security system for the workers of Florida that is more akin to a 401K, what you pay in is your account. For later withdrawal. Not a Ponzi scheme. Let the states who stay in the Federal Union pay the national debt. We out. Good luck with all that.
Oh man, would we prosper as a state, charging exorbitant rates for all to enter to play, with a 2 week time limit and then you’d be forced back out. Come, spend, go. You can apply for citizenship, we will let you know after checking your voting habits in the old US of A if you are qualified to move in.
So to all the Democrats who want to eliminate the Electoral College I say “have at it”. We Floridians will vote to go the next day. You blue state people can stay together, we can all watch you crash and burn in bankruptcy and debt as you spend, and spend, and spend.
I’ll laugh as you turn the whole new country you have into West Baltimore. Gary, Indiana.
Just turning away New Yorkers at the border will be more fun than anything imaginable. “Excuse me sir, is this a New York driver’s license”. “It is, well then you need to vacation in Vermont, sir. Yes sir, I know it is cold there in the Winter, but you’ll be amongst your own, goodbye”.
“Oh, Hello Indiana, yes, nice to see you, come right in. Could you try not to talk while you are here so we don’t have to listen to that awful accent”? “Your two-week clock is ticking, enjoy!”.
Eventually all those New Yorkers in Southern Florida would die off, and the state could really prosper, since we’d vote more conservatives into state government.
You know, maybe it isn’t such a bad idea this idea to abolish the EC.
Florida, as a stand alone nation. Florida and the Conch Republic. We could create our own navy. Defend the shores. Close the border. Remove all the Haitians the Dems moved in illegally. Eliminate the welfare state. Clean up “Florida Man”. What an idea. No more adhering to Federal requirements, rules, and regulations.
“Hey wait, the license says Virginia, but I hear a Yonkers accent”. Turn that guy around, send him back North. Let his kind fly to the Islands. This is the new Floridian Nation, no Yankees allowed.
